Need individual health insurance? Struggling to navigate your options, or to find a plan that fits your needs?
At BenefitCorp, we understand that a great number of individuals are self-employed and retired. Still, others work for small businesses (of less than 50 full-time employees) who do not have to offer health coverage (and who are not penalized for it). This means that every year, a significant number of people do not have access to all-inclusive coverage and, as a result, generally find it difficult to secure it while also ensuring that it meets their budget and needs. It is for this large group that BenefitCorp provides personal individual insurance consulting: consultative advising made to help individuals find the health coverage options they need to both thrive and live with greater peace of mind.
How Does Individual Insurance Work?
In contrast to group insurance (one where a policy is paid in part by another person — typically a business), an individual insurance policy is one that is bought by an individual for themselves. The policyholder takes care of all the premium payments and is presumed to know the extent and details of the coverage (with the help or advice of an insurance agent or broker). This enables them to secure the coverage they need if they are either self-employed or do not have an employer who pays for a policy on behalf of its employees.
Do I Need Individual Insurance Coverage?
In a lone word, yes. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (unofficially known as Obamacare) was a law that took effect January 1, 2014 in an effort to both reduce the number of uninsured Americans and make coverage more affordable, thereby reducing the burden of health care costs on federal and state governments. The reforms themselves set a minimum standard for acceptable coverage, and require that all individuals not covered by an employer plan, TRICARE or other military veteran insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid must choose an acceptable policy from a private insurer or a state exchange.
This means that while you do not technically have to secure coverage, not doing so will subject you to a tax penalty — based on a sliding scale that starts out relatively light, but rapidly increases in size for every year you accrue without coverage. It can get pretty steep, which is why your best bet is find coverage — even if it means working with a broker.
